Birkenstock sandals and clogs have an interesting history. As you can imagine, the brand name Birkenstock started with the man owned the same name as the famous sandals and clogs – Johann Adam Birkenstock of Germany. He registered the trademark back in 1774 in local church archives, and later his grandson Konrad made the first contoured insole that was used for custom footwear. Konrad not only made the first contoured insole, but he also created a revolutionary flexible arch support that could be inserted into shoes made in factories which by 1964 had evolved into an actual shoe created by Karl Birkenstock. The shoe that Karl created is what we now know today as the famed Birkis sandal.
How the brand came to be sold in the USA is when Margot Fraser learned of the shoe while visiting Germany. The support and comfort that it gave to her feet became such a huge relief to her normal pains that she started a trading company known as Birkenstock Footprint Sandals Inc. which has its origins in Novato California.
Even though the name Birkenstock Footprint Sandals Inc. didn’t stay (it is now known as Birkenstock Distribution USA Inc.), it still remains the only distributor, provider and importer of the brand in the USA. The brand saw a huge jump in income and exposure in the medical field – a field renown for the rush, rush of nurses and doctors who are constantly standing and working on their feet. From their humble start in Germany, they have spread like wildfire through all sorts of demographic, from professionals, blue collar workers, and people who just love there birks shoes so much they wear them as an everyday experience.
Even though Birkenstocks were originally popular among medical professionals as work wear, you can find people of all walks of life wearing Brkenstock sandals and clogs. And why not? They are super comfortable, durable, and they have the pleasurable experience of relieving you of any foot discomfort from having to stand on your feet all day long. It just makes sense why Birkenstock sandals and clogs would become such a hip and trendy thing to wear.
Speaking of Birkenstock sandals and & clogs being hip, the “flower children” of the 60s and 70s wore them to such extremes that some political conservatives gave the flower children the label of participating in “Birkenstock liberals” – especially when it came to attacking Howard Dean supporters. Since the days of the flower children have come and gone, berkenstock sandals and clogs enjoy huge popularity yet with teenagers and college-aged students.
When you have a perfect shoe like berkenstock sandals and clogs to make your feet feel great after a long day, it is not hard to imagine exactly why Brkenstock has remained so popular now for well over two centuries. From medical professionals, to people swinging hammers, to the hipsters, to the teenagers and to the college undergraduates, Birkenstock remains in high favor by almost everyone from every walk of life.
